OIP Immersion Trip

Day 1 – Sept 11th

Got up later than I wanted to, but managed to reach the airport on time.

Didn’t eat breakfast…. First flight to Guangzhou was a couple of hours long. In the airport, had an engrish encounter with an officer who told me to look at the crap, but then corrected himself and said camera.

A couple of hours spent in the airport for transit.

When going to the next plane, during the baggage check, I had most of my bag emptied, which was quite an experience.

The flight was then delayed from around 4p.m to 6:30p.m.

Not sure what time we arrived in Wuhan.

Took a long bus ride, ate Macs at around midnight and then finally reached the dorms, which were better than I expected (no squat toilet :D ). Stayed up and played games.

Day 2 – 12th Sept

Went around and did stuff, went for some briefing, looked around the classrooms and ate at some restaurant at the university’s cafeteria. Bought phone cards, and wire for internet. Had trouble eating my dinner cause it was really dry.

Day 3 – 13th Sept

Ate Kfc for lunch, then went to Walmart! The cab dropped me, Ian and Taizhong off way too early, and we ended up taking another cab to reach Walmart. Saw Rabbit meat!

Went for dinner with everyone and heard about some spice that isn’t found anywhere else, and from what I’ve seen so far, lots of road side stalls use it.

Day 4 – 14th Sept

Went for scriptwriting class, walked around outside along the main road,

ate dinner at Teddy’s Kitchen. Went for some haunted walk thing.

Day 5 – 15th Sept

Had I.S lesson on Chinese Opera which was better than the previous one :P . Ate some noodles for lunch, it was alright but the shop keeper said we should have ordered something else. Went to some media company later on, saw people using Maya and drawing stuff, it was pretty good. Ate at Teddy’s kitchen for dinner again.

Day 6 – 16th Sept

Ate lunch at some BBQ-ish place, oil kept burning my arm, but the place provided these arm cloth protector things. Tried rabbit meat there. Went to a ‘night market’, which actually turned out to be a shopping mall, went around, it was pretty warm at night, Azrn had his picture drawn by some artist who made him look slightly Chinese in the drawing.

Day 7 – 17th Sept

Went to a Museum, the buildings there are quite nice! We had some headset thingy to hear the guide but it was all in Chinese. Most of us ended up just looking at the exhibits. Can’t remember much else.

Day 8 – 18th Sept

Woke up at 1p.m for the first time in my life, Went to some far away shopping mall. Trying to hail a cab was a real pain. Even if you flag a cab, other people will still try to get in, plus, it was a really really hot day. Some cabs don’t even want to go to that mall, geez. At the mall, most stalls sold extremely similar items right next to each other… This seems to happen quite a bit in China…. I also found out that the mall closes at 5:30p.m. Went back and ate at some Korean restaurant just around the corner from the dorm.

Day 9 – 19th Sept

Free day, I think…

Day 10 – 20th Sept

Scriptwriting in the morning, I.S in the afternoon.

Day 11 – 21st Sept

Had a mid autumn festival celebration/student interaction thing. We had to prepare something for the event. Initially we wanted to do something in After Effects, ended up changing to a dance. I don’t really like going on stage, but I managed to ignore the crowd and clunkily do the moves. Overall I think we did alright, considering the amount of time we had. There were performances from MCM, ICT and the China students.

After everything was done, There was a sort of party. It was pretty awesome thanks to the strobe lights causing everything to look like some animation. Taizhong was pretty awesome dancing everywhere hilariously. The wind was really strong at night.

Day 12 – 22nd Sept

Free day, the weather was cold! About 16 – 18 degrees if I am correct.

Day 13 – 23rd Sept

Scriptwriting in the morning, then went to Guang Gu Bu Xing Jie (GGBXJ) to shop. Getting a cab in China usually has the same problems most of the time. E.g. people getting to the cab you flagged, driver doesn’t want to go there. Got stuff for the 3 Gorges cruise from Carrefour and found milo! :D

Day 14 to 16 – 24th to 26th Sept

Off to the 3 Gorges today, there was a pretty long bus ride punctuated with stops to Museums and for food. Stopped at a place that had a bunch of stuff related to the 3 Kingdoms and a museum with quite a lot of interesting stuff. Reached the boat in the evening, wasn’t sure what to expect but it wasn’t that bad, my toilet door couldn’t lock and it was really small. Spent quite a bit of time on an open-air part of the boat on top watching the doors close and the water fill up. Day 2 of the trip, went out on a smaller boat to get to more smaller boats where a bunch of these people would row us around. Later on, they got out and pulled the boat past some rocks which was pretty impressive as they had to pull the weight of the boat and all of us inside. At night we climbed up a bunch of stairs and saw more things related to the 3 Kingdoms.

Day 17 – 27th Sept

I think this was the day I totally slept through scriptwriting.

Today’s I.S was interesting, we did calligraphy. I wish I could have kept the brush.

Day 19 – 29th Sept

Scriptwriting class in the morning. Woke up late for class again.

(Finally) Played Super Street Fighter 4 at the arcade at the top of Lotte World!!

Day 20 + 21 – 30th Sept and 1st Oct

Woke up early to go for the trip to Mt. Wudang. The bus was full of other people and so the trip felt a little less comfortable being surrounded by strangers. The seats were also pretty cramped. Ate lunch at some “farmer’s vegetables” or something like that. Then a bus ride up, then it started to rain. Bought a couple of sausages on the way up, Taizhong got his fortune read by some guy, saw an awesomer looking fortune-teller further up with a hat and beard. After it was all over, I was really glad to reach back to a dryer place. After staying in the room for about 9 hours, it was time to leave again. Bus ride to the base again, then the climb. Bought some warm bean curd, finished it and walked on, and on, and on then I fell, then I walked up more stairs. Some of the stairs were crazily long and steep, I felt like I was going to fall down some of them (well I already did). The walk was about 4 hours long. Ate cup noodles at the top. Went up to the Golden Summit and then rushed back down to get back to the bus by 3 P.M which… was wasted cause the bus wasn’t even there when we got back. Reached back to the dorms at night. I was expecting my legs to be in intense pain the next day.

Day 22 – 2nd Oct

But my legs were fine except my left leg was just a bit tense.

Day 23 – 3rd Oct

Ate dinner with Mr. Leslie’s Wife cause she was leaving on Monday.

Day 24 – 4th Oct

Followed everyone to KTV. The place was HUGE 2 floors just for KTV, nothing like this in Singapore, or maybe no where else in the world…

Day 25 – 27 – 5th – 7th Oct

Got up early again to go to Lu Shan. The bus ride up was pretty scary, the way the drivers take on the corners feels like the bus is just going to flip over and fall off the edge. At the top we went in, and the place has a rather large town up there, which I found pretty interesting. First stop, we went to see some waterfall thing, which only had a bunch of rocks for us to get around. It was all very difficult to move around. Saw Mao’s Villa.

Eventually we got to the hotel, which was pretty good, but the only thing was that there were specific times that the hot water would be on. But that was only a minor problem. At night, we could see LOTS of stars. It was pretty awesome, something we don’t find in Singapore.

Day 2 of Lu Shan,

walking up! The scenery was really awesome, the clouds, the view, everything looked really really good.

Day 3 of Lu Shan

We walked down, the highlight was a waterfall. It was awesome!! Never seen a waterfall this big before.

Walked down and saw these 2 people on a tightrope with a bicycle. There didn’t appear to be any safety equipment at all, seemed really nerve racking. At the bottom we took the bus back to Huazhong, bought some chilli on the way.

Day 28 to day 31 – 8th to 11th Oct

The last week of the trip already, time has really flown. I thought 5 weeks was really long, but it didn’t feel long at all. I wouldn’t mind a couple more weeks of China. Kind of sad that it’s coming to an end. We played a lot of arcade since we got back from Lu shan, It’s pretty cheap too!

8th Oct

Scriptwriting on comedy in the morning, Japanese restaurant for lunch, arcade till 3:40 then rushed back for I.S, pretty fun. (Arcade and rushing back… not the I.S) After I.S we went back to the arcade.

9th Oct

Went to GGBXJ with Gigi, Gaby and Taizhong.

Bought Mr Leslie a stuffed toy from his favorite cartoon :D

Gave it to him after I.S, He looked really happy :D

Went to the arcade after dinner!

10th Oct

We were shopping at Tom’s world and when we wanted to go back, it was raining, so we played in the arcade again. After that, we went to breadtalk and bought a cake for Broderick’s Birthday, 10/10/10!

We surprised Broderick with the cake, in a short while, a cake fight happened. Me and Azrn were the UNCAKEABLES! After everyone cleaned up, we ordered macs.

Day 32 – 11th Oct

We went to the Yellow Crane Tower. Outside there was this lady writing some calligraphy with a sponge-like brush. It was pretty good. The Yellow Crane Tower was pretty interesting. There was a giant bell there too! Broderick and Michelle both had a go in ringing it. When we got back, I studied a bit, can’t remember what stopped me from studying.

Day 33 – 12th Oct

Test for Scriptwriting went pretty well. Went for I.S at 3, nothing much happened, then I rushed back to finish writing my script and sent it before 5p.m (PHEW!) We went to the KTV place again and had a bigger room this time. Buy 2 hours, get 7 hours free after 11P.m so we had till 6a.m.

Day 34 – 13th Oct

KTV from 11p.m to 6a.m, writing this at 5:11a.m 13th Oct. Went to sleep at 6:30a.m woke up at 8:45a.m and went to class. The class wasn’t too draggy which was good. Then graduation ceremony, then lunch. Followed Azrn, Ian and Jasmine to the Men’s street then got back and did work! Going off to the arcade again!

Tomorrow We’ll all be leaving this place and going back to Singapore. I kinda miss the place already, a few more weeks would be nice! But anyways, it’s been a really great time and I’ll probably remember this forever (with the help of this blog).
